History of Grama Panchayat
In the early days, this area was under the rule of the Chola kings. It is said that this place got the name Kodumbu because it was known as the place where the Kodumbu aloor people used to live. Balakrishnan Master, a socialist thinker in the Congress, was the one who inspired and initiated the activities of the freedom struggle in this area among teachers and students. K.V. Murugan, a bead worker, was an early worker of the banned Communist Party. He had to endure many tortures in connection with them. The A.G.M.L.P. School, established in Kodump in 1913, was the first educational institution in the panchayat. One of the main temples here, the Pulinkavu Bhagavati Temple, is a temple of great cultural and historical significance. The Nelliyampathi hills with oranges and tea plantations, Malampuzha Dam, Tipu's Fort, Meenkara Dam, and Walayar Deer Park can be combined to develop a tourism center here. Places like Thiruvallathur, Kuthirakal, and Tasrak are historically and internationally well-known. Historically, the Thiruvallathur area has a Tamil-Malayalam syncretic culture. The Shokanashini River, the source river of Bharathapuzha, flows through the Panchayat area, dividing it into two. Since the river flows along the right side of this area, the name Thiruvallathur came into use. The place known as Kuthirakal got its name as it was the stable for horses during Tipu's military campaigns. Since Tipu's horses came from Cossack in Russia and horsemen lived in these places, this place became known as Tasrak. There are numerous places of worship in the Panchayat. In Hindu temples, Kodumpu Subrahmanya Temple and Thiruvallathur Dwara Murthi Temple are the main temples. Kadamkode Islam Mosque and Pirivushala Christian Church are other places of worship. The Ratholsavam in Kodumpu and the Thrikkarthika festival at Thiruvallathur Temple are the major festivals in the village. The beloved Malayalam writer O.V. Vijayan based his famous novel 'Khasakkinte Itihasam' on the place called Tasrak here. The renowned aerospace engineer K.A. Damodaran also lived in this panchayat for a long time.
