Geographical Details
Kodumbu Grama Panchayat is a major local body located in the Chittur Taluk of Palakkad district. Its key geographical features include:
1. Boundaries:
North: Palakkad Municipality and Marutharode Panchayat
East: Pudussery and Polpully Panchayats
South: Perumatty and Pattanchery Panchayats
West: Kannadi and Pirayiri Panchayats
2. Topography: The terrain of this region can be broadly classified into three categories:
Plains: Fertile flatlands that are extensively utilized for agricultural purposes.
Low Hills: While there are no major mountain ranges, the landscape features intermittent low hills and elevated terrains.
Valleys and Waterbodies: Low-lying areas comprising streams, ponds, and paddy fields.
3. Waterbodies and Rivers:
The Kalpathipuzha (also known as Shokanashini River), one of the main tributaries of the Bharathapuzha, flows through or along the border of this panchayat.
The region features numerous streams, ponds, and traditional water sources utilized for agricultural needs. Water from the Malampuzha irrigation canal also significantly supports local farming.
4. Soil and Agriculture:
Black soil and gravelly red soil are predominantly found here.
This soil composition is highly suitable for paddy cultivation. Consequently, a vast majority of the local population depends on rice farming. Apart from paddy, coconut and various vegetables are also widely cultivated.
5. Climate: Due to the influence of the Palakkad Gap, the summer temperature here tends to be slightly higher compared to other villages in Kerala. Strong winds are also a characteristic feature of the local weather. The southwest monsoon (June–July) and the northeast monsoon (October–November) are the primary rainy seasons.
